Audience engagement. Audience freedom. Theatre? Metatheatrical. In dialogue with the audience.

If, in a mash-up, the focus becomes on exploring some part of the audience--vibrations, heat waves, movements, etc.--does that split the focus of the piece? Or, would it engage on a different sort of level--by providing a different way of having the performance in be dialogue with the performers/piece?
