I’ve been spending a lot of time with my grandmother working on making a dress. I’ve always wanted to do it and, everytime I do, something goes wrong. Once I cut the fabric to the wrong measurements, last time I sewed the zipper inside out and to itself….so this time, I insisted that she, the master seamsteress, take the journey with me. We went to pick out the fabric and all the fixins the other day. And I got to thinking about sewing – and crafting for that matter.
With the creation of etsy and knitting groups and all of that stuff – there certainly has been more of a focus on crafting, and I wonder why? Where did this resuregence come from? And why do I feel like it’s only happening in cities? I know of a few sewing stores that have machines and coffee and like-minded people that hang out there. i remember hearing about this one when i was living on the west coast: http://acommonthreadfabrics.com/
It makes me think – what's going on in the suburbs? what is this connection of crafting with the youth of the city? i'd like to find out if crafts go on outside of a city. i mean, are there knitting groups of 20 somethings in smithtown? are there communities of bakers in port washington? do people still make metal rosary beads at the church in commack? and if they are, are they different from those youth crafting circles happening in the city? why or why not? and what does this even mean?
maybe a bigger question here is - what's so different about the youth in the suburbs vs. the youth in the city?
