Going to bed at 9pm is a good thing. And I try to be good. In 3rd grade, the rebellious streak forbade me to give in too early. But now I cherish every hour and version of sleep. Like tonight because there's no school! SCORE.
In The Cosby Show, Dr. Huxtable (Bill Cosby) told his kids that he slept with his eyes open. And, as a college student, I believe that statement is true! Staring blankly into space can count as “sleeping with your eyes open” because you’re not wholly in the moment because of your commitment to relaxing. That glazed look shot at every professor can count also. You’re in your own head and not aware of the environment, just like in your sleep. I love sleeping with my eyes open.
Sometimes I feel that I know the halls in my house well enough that I can close my eyes while walking. I’ll find my way into the kitchen without opening my eyes and still avoid bruises by the tables and chairs. When I wait for my waffles to toast, I like to sleep. When I brush my teeth, I like to sleep.
When I don’t have enough sleep, I can feel my eyes going dry, heavy and sagging, almost like a futuristic threat. My arms get lethargic and grow a fondness for the protection of my comforter. Who cares if my little sister makes fun of me because I go to bed before her!
But at night, I do the normal thing: sleeping with my eyes closed. It’s a nice alternative and the best pleasure you can get at the end of the day. It’s only when the bastardly chime of the alarm clock breaks your peace that your try to reclaim it all over again.
